Robin Liu, the executive widely credited with stabilising OnePlus in India during a difficult period, has stepped down from his role. His departure comes at a time when the company is facing renewed pressure in one of its most crucial markets.
The company confirmed that Liu is currently serving his notice period and is expected to return to China by the end of March. OnePlus stated that the decision was driven by his intent to pursue personal interests, adding that operations in India will continue without disruption.
A Key Architect Behind OnePlus’ India Growth
Liu joined OnePlus in 2018 and played a central role in reshaping its India strategy. During his tenure, the brand transitioned from a largely online-focused business model to a broader retail presence, helping it strengthen its foothold in the premium smartphone segment.
With academic credentials from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Liu brought over a decade of experience in sales, marketing, and go-to-market execution. As CEO, he oversaw core functions including branding, channel expansion, and product positioning.
Market Challenges Begin to Mount
Despite earlier success, the past two years have been less favourable for OnePlus in India. Industry data indicates that the company’s market share dropped significantly—from 3.9% in 2024 to 2.4% in 2025—marking one of the sharpest declines among major smartphone players.
Competition from rivals such as Samsung and Vivo has intensified, particularly in the premium category where OnePlus once held a strong position. Pricing pressures, supply issues, and evolving consumer preferences have further complicated the landscape.
In response, the company has reportedly shifted back toward a more online-centric sales approach in an effort to optimise margins and streamline operations.
Exit Timing Raises Strategic Questions
Liu’s resignation is particularly notable given recent developments. Just months earlier, he had dismissed speculation about OnePlus scaling down operations in key markets, calling such reports inaccurate.
However, his departure has reignited discussions about the company’s long-term direction, especially as it undergoes deeper integration within Oppo, its parent group.
Leadership Gap at a Critical Moment
As of now, OnePlus has not announced a successor for the India CEO position. This creates a leadership vacuum in a market that continues to be vital to the brand’s global ambitions.
Liu’s exit may also reflect a broader organisational shift, with OnePlus increasingly aligning its operations with Oppo’s larger ecosystem.
The Road Ahead for OnePlus India
While OnePlus has assured continuity in its India operations, the leadership change arrives at a sensitive time. With declining market share and rising competition, the company’s next moves will be closely watched by both industry observers and consumers.
Whether this transition signals a strategic reset or deeper structural changes remains to be seen.
